Running the Race – #4

Philippians 1:9-11 – And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ; having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

In today’s society, we hear a lot about love. People talk about how we should love one another and we should act in love. And God’s word supports that, to an extent. Here Paul is reminding the people that their love should abound but he also explains that love should coexist along with discernment and truth.

We cannot truly others as God loves us without understanding God’s truth. When people separate God’s truth from God’s love they end up with a love that seems tolerant of anyone and anything. God does love people. He loves everyone. However, he does not love what everyone does, and neither should we. Loving people sometimes means telling them the truth about their situation, or the truth about their sin. As we look around us and see a world desperately in need of God’s love, are we willing them to love them enough to tell them the truth about their need for Christ because of the sin that they are involved in in their lives?

Only when we truly love someone, will we want to see them become all that God desires them to become in their life. Love does not leave someone in sin, love reveals people’s sin and their need for the Savior. Do we love other people today?
