A contest! Elijah decides it’s time for the people to really figure out who they are going to believe in and trust. He’s just challenged them to pick a side. Now he proposes a contest to determine who is the real God. Read 1 Kings 18:22-24.

Then Elijah said to the people, “I alone am left a prophet of the Lord , but Baal’s prophets are 450 men. Now let them give us two oxen; and let them choose one ox for themselves and cut it up, and place it on the wood, but put no fire under it; and I will prepare the other ox and lay it on the wood, and I will not put a fire under it. Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord , and the God who answers by fire, He is God.” And all the people said, ” That is a good idea.”

Elijah believes that he is alone. He believes he’s the only prophet of God who is left and now he wants to go head to head against all the other prophets of the false gods the people are worshiping. He proposes this contest and the people agree that it’s a great idea.

How confident are we in our God? We talk about him being All-powerful and we talk about his might, but would we really trust him to put him up against the other “gods”? We should! God is All-powerful and completely over all the other gods.

Who do we trust in? And if we say we trust in him, do we really trust in him, no matter what?
