Christian Devotional – July 28, 2019

“You can’t do it.” Many of us have used these words as inspiration to push us and drive us to do better. However, we are human and there are things that we can’t do, and God knows it.

He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, there was an angel touching him, and he said to him, “Arise, eat.” Then he looked and behold, there was at his head a bread cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again. The angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise, eat, because the journey is too great for you.” So he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God.

Elijah is alone and he’s scared. He is being hunted by one of the most ruthless women in history. God has to remind him that he can’t do this. However, God can do this. God sends an angel to help Elijah understand that he can’t do it on his own and he needs God’s help.

Do we realize when we need God’s help or do we stubbornly keep pushing forward, no matter what? We are human, and we are sinful. Therefore, we really can’t do anything that God wants done. If God is going to see results through anything, it will be because he done it through us, not because we worked really hard at it.

Are we willing to let go and allow God to move and work in us, knowing that we can’t accomplish anything he has for us unless he does it through us? God helped Elijah see that and as a result did something miraculous in him over that next 40 days. If we will allow God to do what only he can do in us, we also will see ourselves doing miraculous and amazing things through the power of God.
