Twenty pieces of silver. Last we saw Joseph, he is searching for his brothers because his father asked him to. Well, he finds them and they aren’t happy to see him. Ultimately they decide to sell him as a slave for 20 pieces of silver. See Genesis 37:18-36.

Then some Midianite traders passed by, so they pulled him up and lifted Joseph out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. Thus they brought Joseph into Egypt.

I’ve often wondered what Joseph’s response was throughout this. Was he yelling at them? Did he beg them to let him go? Ultimately they chose not to kill him, but to sell him instead.

So all Joseph’s hopes and plans for his life changed in an instant as he found himself being led away in chains. I figure that he wanted to wake from this to find it was a bad dream. But it wasn’t. He went from beloved, favored son to lowly slave in an instant.

Our life can change in an instant. Accidents, diagnoses, actions of others, etc, can all impact us without any warning. Then we find ourselves heading down a path we never thought we would be on. How we respond to these situations reflects who we are and where we put our trust. Will we continue to hold fast to God’s truth in our lives or not?
