Christian Devotional – February 19, 2019

Are you guilty of adultry? No one ever wants to admit that, but James explains clearly that many of us are and why. Read James 4:4.

You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
James 4:4 NASB

What is adultry? When a person pledges himself to another person only, their spouse, and then goes and gives his attentions and devotion to someone else. So, if we have promised ourselves to God and then are giving ourselves to the world by seeking pleasure and fulfillment from it instead, then we are guilty of adultry.

What pleasure can the world offer? It’s like watching marketing in action. Everything is dressed up and pretty and first “helps” us realize that we have a “need.” Maybe even a “need” that we never realized we had. Then, it tells us how their product or service meets that need. So, the obvious conclusion is that we get that product/service.

We buy into this trap from the world because we forget that Christ has promised to fulfill every one of our true needs. He knows them better than we do ourselves anyway. He just isn’t flashy about it. But, his fulfillment is longer lasting and more satisfying than anything the world tries to substitute.

Have we been committing adultry with the world? God wants to be the only one to meet and satisfy our needs, if we will turn to Him as our only love.
