1 Samuel 5:4–But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold only his body remained.
The Israelites had been disobedient, so the Philistines had defeated them in battle and captured the ark of the covenant. The Philistines mistakenly believed that God was just like any other god so the placed the ark in their temple with their other god Dagon. But, God is God and He is over every other thing and so that feeble piece of stone that the Philistines had been worshipping didn’t stand a chance next to the Almighty God. What in our lives are we trying to replace God with? What feeble piece of creation are we holding on to in our lives? God towers over it all and we must exalt Him above absolutely everything else in our lives.
Father, my heart is Your temple. I will praise You and lift You up; only You. No other idol or image will reside in my heart for I belong to You alone.
