No fire. Elijah is going over the rules of this contest. He tells the other prophets that they are to make an altar and put the sacrifice on it and make everything ready, but not to add the fire. Read 1 Kings 18:25-26.

So Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one ox for yourselves and prepare it first for you are many, and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it. ” Then they took the ox which was given them and they prepared it and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon saying, “O Baal, answer us.” But there was no voice and no one answered. And they leaped about the altar which they made.

As we are considering all that God does in our lives, how often do we try to get things ready on our own, but then fail to get the fire? Elijah knew where the fire came from and he was watching as these others were going to try to make things happen on their own without the fire.

Do we come to God for the fire we need to be productive and get things done? What are we trying to get done on our own without getting the fire from him?
