Leading Through Challenging Circumstances, Day 5

Blind obedience. Read Daniel 2:14.

We’ve all met the people who just do whatever they’re told to do. They don’t ever seem to have an independent thought and they just always go along with the flow. When you pair someone like that up with a unrealistic leader, you end up with trouble. As we saw in the previous days, the king has made a completely unrealistic demand. The first response we saw was the group of people who whined about it. And yes, it was completely unrealistic, but their whining didn’t help anything. And in fact, it just made it worse, because it made the king angry.

Today, we see the people who blindly obey. The king is angry, and he has now ordered the death of all of the wise men in the area. So the commander goes to just follow orders. Whenever we have people in leadership, we will always have people who blindly follow. Instead, we need to have respect for our leaders, and we need to understand their authority, but blindly following leadership never leads anywhere good.

Thankfully, this soldier was willing to listen to Daniel and pause to evaluate the situation before just simply following through on what he had been ordered to do. But, I’ve met many people who were not interested in hearing any other discussion and didn’t want to think through anything else. They were there just simply to do whatever they had been ordered to do.

We need to be respectful and we need to understand the authority that people have, but we are not to blindly follow through on what people tell us to do because people are sinful and we need to ensure that we are following God first and foremost. Are we following God today?
