Book Review – Killing Lincoln by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard
Abraham Lincoln was one of the most fascinating figures in history, living during one of the most tumultuous times in United States history, and dying in a shocking assassination plot. This is a fascinating book that reads like a story. I wish my history books in school would have been this interesting and informative about the entire circumstance surrounding the death of one of the greatest Presidents of the United States. I was enthralled with the style of writing as the book reads much more like a novel than a history book.
O’Reilly and Dugard include the entire background story surrounding the events that lead up to the assassination, starting with Lincoln’s second inauguration, moving through the surrender of General Lee at Appomattax Court house to end the Civil War, and giving detailed accounts of the background of John Wilkes Booth and his ultimate grand scheme to assassinate not only President Lincoln, but General Ulysses Grant, Vice President Andrew Jackson, and Secretary of State William Seward.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it opened my eyes to the bigger picture regarding these events. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about Lincoln or these events that are a part of our country’s history.
