Christian Devotional – August 29, 2019

What do you want? It’s an interesting question that can sometimes be difficult to answer. For Elisha, this question was asked by Elijah and so Elisha came up with an answer. Read 2 Kings 2:9.

When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please, let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.”

Elisha wanted to do twice as much as Elijah had done. He asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. All the miracles and wonders that Elijah had demonstrated through God’s power, Elisha wanted twice as much. It’s interesting that that is what he asked for, as even when you look through the rest of history, Elijah is the one that is remembered. It’s not Elisha, even though he did twice as many miracles as Elijah did.

What would we have asked for? If we had seen the way God had used Elijah and had been following him around for many years, what would we have asked him for? Would we have asked to know God better? Would we have asked for twice as long of a life As we continue to seek God in all that we do, every desire of our heart should be to know and understand him more. So anytime anyone asks us a question about what we want, it would be to understand and glorify God more every day.
