How to lead. What makes up a great leader? Yesterday Paul shared with Timothy the importance of the motivation that he should have as he goes about doing the things that God has given him to do. Today, Paul goes into some of the characteristics of leadership that are not positive and that do not help move the gospel message forward, but that unfortunately are all too common among the leaders. Read 1 Timothy 1:6-7.

For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.

If you lose your motivation, then you lose the point behind everything you are saying and doing. These men, no longer working and striving for the love between individuals, now are simply speaking in order to gain higher position for themselves. They want to be teachers of the law, but don’t understand why God has given certain things as laws. They are simply spouting what they know and making statements that they don’t understand.

Why do we say what we say? Do we have the right motivation like Paul shared with Timothy yesterday? If we don’t, we should keep our mouths shut. Otherwise, we will find ourselves in the exactly the same situation that these leaders did. They are leading people down a path that they should not be going down. They are trying to see people grow and improve for the sole reason of elevating themselves and making themselves seem great.

Leadership is never about making yourself great. Leadership is about making your team great and that can only be done if your motivation is truly love. Are you a leader? What kind of leader are you today?
