Go and Do, Day 4

“What you do is what you believe and everything else is a lie.” Read James 1:22-27.

I still remember when my husband came home from a conference and told me that statement. He told me that the speakers had all been running behind and so by the time it got to one of the speakers, they didn’t have hardly any time left for him. My husband said the speaker calmly got up on stage, apologized for the lack of time, then said, “I really only have one thing to say to you anyway. What you do is what you believe and everything else is a lie.” Once that statement was delivered, he left the stage and sat down. The crowd sat in utter silence. My husband felt that speaker accomplished more with that 15 second speech than all the others did throughout the rest of the day.

James says basically the same thing in these straightforward verses. Our actions must align with what we say and what we know. We can study the Bible and learn what it says, but if it never permeates our minds and hearts, and then translates into action, then we really can’t say we know or believe it.

If someone were to create a list of our beliefs based solely on observing our actions throughout the course of a day, week, or month, what would that person say we believe? If our actions don’t align to what we say we believe, we must repent and submit to Christ so that he can act through us.
