Observations from the Doctor, Day 14

Does the inside match the outside? Read Luke 11:33-54.

I cut into an avocado the other day. It was a beautiful color on the outside, but when I cut into it, it had already started to go bad on the inside. Over the years I have had similar experiences with multiple fruits or vegetables and that has always been a frustrating experience. However, it’s not nearly as frustrating as when the same thing happens with a person. How many times have we experienced a situation where we had one view or impression of a person, and then something happens and we end up seeing a different side or the “inside” of the person that, and it doesn’t match up.

That’s what Jesus is speaking about here. If we are taking care of the inside first, then the outside should be a reflection of that healthy inside. The problem comes when, like the religious leaders that Jesus talks to later in the chapter, we focus only on the outside. When we are working to polish the outside and not addressing the inside, we look great, but the inside starts to rot.

Are we focusing on the inside are we seeking to be the light? As Jesus says, when our eyes are healthy, our whole body is full of light. We need to be focusing on what is on the inside and ensuring that lines up with Jesus and his desires for our life. How do we need to ensure that the inside of our lives matches what we’re outwardly displaying to others?
