Christian Devotional – January 17, 2020

Day – 17: More praying, more doing. Sounds similar to a Home Depot commercial, but that describes exactly how the people responded when the opposition increased. Read Nehemiah 4:7-9.

Now when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the repair of the walls of Jerusalem went on, and that the breaches began to be closed, they were very angry. All of them conspired together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause a disturbance in it. But we prayed to our God, and because of them we set up a guard against them day and night.

The opposition intensified and yet, how did Nehemiah and the people respond? They prayed more and did more. There really is no other response to opposition other than to pray and to be obedient.

Maybe we pushed through the first round of attack and criticism, but what about the second, or the third? Do we continue to be obedient to God even when it gets harder before it gets better? Nehemiah did and God continued to be faithful to him and to the work he was doing. Will we continue to be faithful in the face of opposition today?
