Understanding Purpose, Day 18

Still breathing? Still purpose. Read Acts 13:36.

As we look today at purpose, our scripture comes from the book of Acts, detailing much of the early church. This chapter tells of the sermons Paul was preaching. As Paul is going through and sharing the history of the people and how that points to Jesus Christ as the Savior, he makes this statement about David in verse 36.

David served God’s purpose until he died. And when he had completed his purpose, that is when God brought him home. There are lots of additional context items in this chapter to be aware of, including realizing how David fit into the larger story of the people of Israel. But one thing is clear through this message, when David had finished the purpose God had for him, David died.

As we look at our own lives, we all have purpose that God has given us. When we have finished our purpose, we will die, but not before. God wants to accomplish his purpose through us. And he will do that in the best way that he sees fit, understanding that is the entire reason we are here. Once we have completed all of God’s purpose for us, he will call us home to spend eternity with him.

We can truly think like Paul does in Philippians that to live is Christ and to die is gain. We should not think that we are washed up or finished. If we are still breathing, God still has purpose for us. Are we seeking to live out God’s purpose? No matter what our age or circumstance?
