Double Portion – #18

More food than they need. Sound familiar? Here we see Elisha in a story that foreshadows Jesus feeding a large group of people with a small amount of food. Read 2 Kings 4:42-44

Now a man came from Baal-shalishah, and brought the man of God bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack. And he said, “Give them to the people that they may eat.” His attendant said, “What, will I set this before a hundred men?” But he said, “Give them to the people that they may eat, for thus says the Lord , ‘They shall eat and have some left over.'” So he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord .

A man brought a gift of food and Elisha wanted him to share it with everyone there. However, when you looked at the amount, there wasn’t enough to go around. Still, Elisha’s instructions were clear, pass it out. What they found is that the bread made it to all the people and they had left-overs. There was more than enough.

Just like the story in the New Testament when Jesus fed the 5000 and the 4000, we see that God and his provision is enough. Knowing that God can provide our needs and being able to trust him to do that is a crucial piece of faith for people to have and to remember. God is our provider, not people. As God provides, his provision will always be enough to meet the needs that we have. It may not look like it at the beginning, but that doesn’t change the outcome.

Are we open to how God chooses to me our names? Are we expecting him to meet our needs even when we can’t understand how He will do it in the moment?
