Leading Through Challenging Circumstances, Day 44

“Everyone agrees.” Read Daniel 6:6-9.
It’s always dangerous to start out a phrase with, “everyone agrees,” especially if everyone is not present. These leaders were trying to frame Daniel. They didn’t want Daniel to be in the position of power that he was in and as a result, they were trying to concoct a way to discredit him.
When they came to the king, they made the king believe that every single one of all of these advisers all felt the same way. Daniel was one of those people. Daniel would have been included in that list of people and obviously they had not consulted him.
We have to be so careful when people come to us as leaders and tell us that everyone feels a certain way. So often people appoint themselves as the spokesperson for a group, and generally that’s done so that they can advance their own agenda. Instead of actually getting everyone’s consensus on something, they end up just telling the leader what they want to have done. Then, they say that everyone agrees.
As leaders, sometimes the challenging circumstances we face are brought to us by the people who work for us. They can make it very difficult and challenging to really know what others are thinking. Often, the loudest group is not necessarily the right group. As leaders, we have to be able to sift through all the noise and understand what everyone actually thinks, not just what one person tells us everyone thinks. The king would learn this lesson the hard way. Let’s learn from his example and be sure that we are checking what everyone actually thinks, and not just taking one person’s word for it.
