Greed. This incredibly common desire is also the source of so many problems. It’s amazing, even in Paul’s time they dealt with this issue of greed and lust for riches and wealth. See 1 Timothy 6:9.
But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.
As you see here, it’s not so much about being rich as it is about the desire to be rich. It’s the want and desire that creates the problems. The temptation to have money and lots of it can be a snare that trips up even the best of people. Remember, Paul is talking to believers here, not people who are lost. These are people who believe in Jesus Christ and have accepted in him, and yet they are finding themselves drawn in by the temptation of the lust of wealth.
Is this a temptation for us? Do we find ourselves drawn in and captivated by the desire for more money? If we are seeking after that, we will find ourselves caught in a snare that we can’t find our way out of without the forgiveness of Jesus Christ.
