But God, Why? Day 8

Unjust gain. Read Habakkuk chapter 2, focusing on verses 9-11.

Don’t take what isn’t yours. Yesterday we saw the importance of God’s judgment against those people who have stolen and taken by extortion. Today, we are looking at the second “woe” of sin. We see those who have unjust gain. Maybe they didn’t steal it exactly, but they set the circumstances up in such a way that they were going to take something unjustly. It might not be as direct as stealing, but it’s still stealing.

Taking things that they didn’t earn and don’t deserve was the hallmark of the Babylonian people. They captured countries and cities and would take everything in them. As an example, the Babylonians ended up taking all of the riches of the temple of Jerusalem back to their homeland with them after they conquered Israel. God knew that this was an area that they were wrong in and that they would be judged.

As a result, we need to be careful that we are not taking anything that belongs to other people, whether directly or indirectly. Our focus must be on giving glory to God for everything, and not seeking to build up our own glory. Ultimately, the Babylonians would be judged for this, and one day, we will be, too.
