Leading Through Challenging Circumstances, Day 28

Adding advice. Read Daniel 4:26-27.

How many times have you wanted to add in your own advice to the information that you’re sharing with others? People will talk to you about something as I’m telling them data or other information that they’ve asked for, sometimes I feel that it’s important that I include some advice. It can be really difficult to give advice to others, especially if they have not asked for it. Often, you have to truly try to understand the situation and ensure that it’s going to be appropriate to add our own advice.

Daniel was in a precarious position here. He was there to advise the king so his entire job was to give the king advice. However, the king didn’t always really like advice and often would do whatever he wanted anyway. But in this situation, Daniel took the opportunity to give the king some advice. Daniel had just given the King some truly terrible news, but Daniel had some ideas on ways in which he could avoid that terrible news. Daniel advised the king that he needed to repent and seek after God.

In a lot of ways, this sounds very similar to what happened in the book of Jonah. Not that long ago, we went through that book in series and saw that Jonah went and delivered a message to the people that they were going to be destroyed. In that case, the king was the one who said, “Let’s all repent because maybe God will spare us.” God did spare them and had compassion on them. Daniel is trying to convince the king that that might work for him, too.

Are we willing to offer advice to people on the way out from their sin and judgment and destruction, even when they haven’t requested our opinion? This is important enough that we need to be willing to share it. Daniel shares this from a place of care and compassion for the king. Do we share the gospel message from a place of care and compassion? Who do we need to take the extra step to share with today?
