Why I Believe in Christ, Day 3

The Law is not in our favor. Read Romans chapter 3.
In chapter 3 of Romans, we see Paul spend a lot of time discussing the law from the Old Testament. The Jewish people were taught the importance of keeping the law. They understood the law to be the way into God’s good graces. Keeping the law was how you make God happy. So, Jews would spend every waking moment of their life doing their best to follow every single commandment in the law.
However, that’s not possible. Paul says in verse 23 that we’ve all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. If we can’t possibly keep it, why did God give the law to the people? Here in verse 20, we see very clearly that the reason God gave the law was to demonstrate to all of us how incredibly sinful we are. The law was given as an impossible standard by which we would never be able to measure up. We cannot follow the law completely.
Over and over, through this chapter, we see Paul reiterate the message: we are only justified through faith in Christ. We can only be made right with God through our faith in Christ. We cannot follow the law completely. When we look at things like the 10 commandments and the laws throughout the Old Testament, that is a reminder that we are sinful. That is a reminder that we need God’s mercy and grace.
Are we resting in our faith in Christ and seeking his grace and mercy in everything that we do? It is only through him that we can be made right with God.
