Why I Believe in Christ, Day 6

We were crucified with Christ. Read Romans chapter 6.
Paul has been slowly building his argument. Paul begins the book by explaining just how lost and sinful we are. He works painstakingly to make sure everyone understands the depth of their depravity. There is absolutely nothing that can save them. Paul then starts to build on that understanding. Christ was perfect. Christ was able to do everything we were not. Christ was able to fulfill everything that we were not.
Here in chapter 6, we see that Christ’s crucifixion was truly on our behalf, because we were in essence crucified with him. We died as well. Our sinful nature and the sinful flesh that we have, when we come to Christ, gets placed on the cross, just like Christ was, and it’s crucified. Christ paid the penalty that we deserved for our sins.
Paul’s argument builds from a place of logic to help people understand how the law leads to Christ. And now, Paul is taking it even further and helping them to understand how Christ was the fulfillment of the law.
When we look at our lives, we are not any less sinful than any of the people there in that time. We need Christ’s sacrifice, just as they needed. Christ’s death on the cross was a literal representation of the death that we all deserved. Paul says it again in Galatians, “We are crucified with Christ so that it’s not us who lives. It’s him.” Christ was the only one resurrected from the dead. We were not. As a result, when we are crucified with him, it is only Christ that is resurrected, and that’s what lives in our life going forward. Are we willing to relinquish control and allow Christ to live in, and through us every day?
