A Prayer for You, Day 24

Who gets the credit? Read Philippians chapter 3, focusing on verses 15-19.

Paul has been talking about all of the support that he’s received from the people of Philippi. He is so grateful and thankful to them for all they have done for him. Now he ends up talking a little bit about “credit.” What is the credit that they are going to receive? He wants to make sure that they get credit for all of the help they have provided him.

In our day and time, people are deeply concerned about credit. We want to know who is getting the credit for everything that goes right. And if something goes wrong, we want to make sure the blame is appropriately doled out as well. Paul knows that God knows everything that the Philippians have done for him. So he’s not worried about God knowing and giving credit. Paul wants other believers to understand how much he credits the Philippians for what they have done.

The Philippians weren’t out bragging about everything they had done. Instead, Paul is the one speaking about it. Giving credit is not about us. We are not to be the ones going around bragging and boasting about everything that we do. Credit must come from others and from the Lord. God sees what we do.

Paul’s prayer for the Philippians was that they would be content with God’s credit with them. Are we seeking credit for what we do from the Lord himself, and are we content with that?
