Wisdom Squandered, Day 2

Is ignorance bliss? Read Ecclesiastes 1:12-18.

As we read through this second half of the first chapter, Solomon introduces himself to us and explains why he’s writing this book. We see that he feels his failure so keenly. Solomon understands that he has not been able to achieve everything that he thought he would with all of his wisdom. And because of his wisdom, he recognizes his failure even more acutely than someone who wouldn’t have been wise. It recalls to mind the idea that ignorance is bliss.

However, Solomon is not ignorant, and he recognizes that the wisdom he has, has not been used to the best that it could have been. God gives us wisdom and through his wisdom, we can be truly wise in a way that benefits and glorifies God. We have to understand and recognize the difference between trying to create our own wisdom, and relying and resting on God’s wisdom. Solomon did not learn the difference until the end of his life.

When we look back on areas in which we have sin, it can be easy to be overwhelmed by remorse and guilt. However, that is the beauty of Jesus Christ and his offer of forgiveness. John wrote in 1 John that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. God promises that. Are we willing to do away with our own wisdom and seek God’s wisdom?
