The Roman Road, Day 2

Step 2: We have earned death. Read Romans 6:23.

My daughter recently changed jobs, and while it wasn’t the entire reason, part of the reason why she changed is she moved to a job that pays her more money. Her wages have increased. The new job believes the value that she brings is higher, so they are paying her more.

Often we like to think of things in terms of what we are owed. We feel that we are entitled or have earned certain things like a specific amount of salary or a certain amount of benefits. What we need to understand is that we have actually truly only ever earned one thing, and that’s death.

We read in today’s verse that what we are actually owed and what we should be paid is death. Our wages should result in our annihilation. It’s important that we recognize how the incredible free gift of God provides eternal life. We don’t deserve it. Nothing we do can possibly put us in a right relationship with God. The only thing we have earned is death and each and every one of us have earned that.

Do we recognize that we are all sinners? And do we realize that our sin has resulted in a death sentence for us? That is why we need the free gift of God.
