Who is God? Day 7

God is just. Read Nahum chapter 3, focusing on verses 1-7.

We have learned many things about God as we’ve read through these verses. One truth that is abundantly clear is that God is just. In chapter 3, we see the coming punishment of Nineveh described. God’s destruction is going to be complete and absolute. However, it’s with reason that he is judging the people of Nineveh.

God is just in what he does, and he maintains justice. If people have done wrong, the result of sin is death. God must maintain that order. Now, God is holy and God is just. We see this in his treatment of Nineveh, but we also see this in our own life. We are sinful, and as a result, we deserve judgment and death. Thankfully, God is patient and does not immediately judge everyone. Unfortunately, sometimes that makes people think they’re getting away with things. Or that what they’re doing is okay.

Judgment is coming for us just as surely as it was coming for Nineveh. Nineveh’s judgment had been delayed for hundreds of years. And God will delay our judgment. But that doesn’t mean that we will not be held accountable for the wrongs that we have committed. God provided Jesus Christ, as a way to repent. We cannot be just on our own.

On our own before God, we are as guilty as the people of Nineveh and as deserving of the judgment they received. The character of God has not changed. He continues to be just. Will we seek out his mercy through his son, Jesus Christ. That is the only way to survive the judgment of God.
