The third time. Once again Elijah asks Elisha to stay behind. Once again, Elisha says no. Read 2 Kings 2:5-6.

The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho approached Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that the Lord will take away your master from over you today?” And he answered, “Yes, I know; be still.” Then Elijah said to him, “Please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” And he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on.

Elisha still knows what is going to happen. The other prophets there are reminding him and once again Elijah has asked him to stay behind while he travels further. How persistent are we in doing what God has told us to do?

Elijah kept asking that he wait behind. Why? It doesn’t really say why Elijah continued to ask him. Did Elijah really want to be alone? Was Elijah testing Elisha’s commitment to following through on what God had shared with him? We don’t know, but the end result is that Elisha followed through on what God had told him to do.

Can the same be said of us? Do we continue to obey even when we get push back from others?
