At the Right Moment, Day 3

Greed, pride, and lust for power. Read Esther chapter 3.
Haman enters the picture in this chapter. Unfortunately, Haman suffers from three character flaws that can be attributed to many people these days. He’s greedy. He has an incredible amount of pride. And, he is completely lusting after every amount of power he can get. He is in a high position in the government. He knows it, and he wants everybody else to know it too. However, one man refuses to bow down to him.
Mordecai will only bow to the one true God. He will not bow to this man who walks around thinking he’s awesome. When Haman learns this, his anger and frustration boils over. It becomes not just about Mordecai, but about all of Mordecai’s people. It’s not going to be enough to punish just the one man, Haman wants to punish everyone who is of the same lineage as Mordecai.
Now, there is a lot of historical bad blood going on between Haman’s people and the Jews and that definitely plays a role here. But, we can see just how vengeful and spiteful Haman is, based on his desire to punish not just Mordecai, but all the Jews. He’s even willing to wait almost an entire year to exact this punishment, if he can be assured that it will, in fact, result in the annihilation of all of the Jewish people.
God is busy positioning people in the right place at the right time. But what we see here is that sin’s quest for ultimate power results in ultimate destruction. Spoiler alert, Haman and his entire family will ultimately be destroyed as we go through this book. But, we can be assured that our similar attitude will result in the same kinds of things.
Are we bringing our issues and our concerns to God and allowing him to address them, or are we seeking to address issues ourselves? We must remain focused on giving God glory and praise and allowing him to deal with anyone else and any other frustrations that we may encounter. Don’t be like Haman. Don’t allow anger to overwhelm you and to result in a bad judgment and horrible decisions.
