Article – Are you Fruitful…or Fruity?
I am the Sunday Devotional writer for the Sisters in Cahoots blog. This is a wonderful group of ladies and I highly enjoy all their articles. Today, I’m starting a series over the Fruit of the Spirit. I encourage you to check it out! Click on the link below to be taken to the full article! Have you ever wondered if a fruit tree can refuse to make fruit?I’ve wondered that sometimes as I look at the lovely trees that create the wonderful fruit I enjoy eating. Now certainly, there are times when the weather gets too cold and freezes and the trees don’t produce fruit. Or, if they don’t get…

The Decay Within – Production Diary, Part 8 – Marketing
I must say, having a book in production is something like being pregnant. By the time the last trimester comes around, time seems to stand still and nothing moves as fast as we want it to. We spend a lot of time just waiting and waiting until the time is right to meet the newcomer. Well, we are in the final stretch, the last stage of the book production process. Now, I’ve headed over to Marketing. The book itself is complete. Everything is set, it’s headed over to the printer to start creating copies to send to distributors who will in turn provide books to bookstores, online book retailers, and…

The Decay Within – Production Diary, Part 7 – Layout
This month has The Decay Within moving to the layout phase of production. Now that the cover has been chosen (see below) we can really start to grind out the details of a book that I certainly never thought about before. What font should we use? How wide should the margins be? Should the headings be centered or left-justified? How do we want to format the chapter beginnings? Who knew there were so many little things to think about!Luckily, I’m not alone in this task. Tate Graphic Designer Sarah Kirchen has joined the “Decay Within team” this month to polish off the final details. She’s going to take elements from…

The Decay Within – Production Diary, Part 6 – Cover Options
OK, the moment we’ve all been waiting for is here. It’s time to look at some pictures! My cover designer really took the information and gave me some interesting and unique choices. I need to make a choice quickly so we can move on through the process, but I wanted to open it up for comment and see what you think about their creations. I welcome comments, ideas, and thoughts. What strikes you? What would make you want to pick up the book if you were walking along a shelf of books? What would entice you enough to want to turn the book over to see the back?Speaking of the back,…

Production Diary – The Decay Within, Part 5 – Cover Design
They say a picture is worth a thousand words.Well, I’m now beginning the search for a picture that will be worth a little over 24,000 words! That’s right, after two and a half months of writing and rewriting and reviewing and reading, I’ve finalized the content for The Decay Within. It comes in at a little over 24,000 words, which is a nice size for a ten session Bible study. I have so much to thank my editor Lindsey for. She was fabulous to work with and had some great ideas and input! Now comes the time when we get to put a visual image with the words that have been so carefully…

Production Diary – The Decay Within, Part 4 – Rewrites
I consider myself a recovering perfectionist. The perfectionist side of me started early on. I liked to get everything just perfect. In all the things I tried (piano, drawing, sports, playing the flute, reading, Spanish, math, etc), I wanted to not just be good, but perfect. While this will come as a shock to none of you that know me, I am not perfect. I had to eventually decide how I was going to react when I was not perfect. Would I pitch a fit, say that skill is worthless, and refuse to do it any more (umm, piano lessons)? Or would I accept it, learn from it, and try…

Production Diary – The Decay Within, Part 3 – Conceptual Editing
We’re a little ways into the month, but with the Fourth of July holiday, I think things got a little behind Tate’s original schedule. I am excited to share with you that I’ve just received official word that The Decay Within has moved from Copy Editing over to Conceptual Editing. So what is Conceptual editing? Well, copy editing dealt with grammar issues. Now, my conceptual editor is going to really go through the book and review it for the content. Does what I said on page 15 mesh with what I said on page 93. Would a particular statement be better in another spot? That sentence doesn’t make sense there and…

The Decay Within – Production Diary, part 2 – Copy Editing
Is it there, their, or they’re? Do I use a semi-colon or just a comma? Or maybe a period? When it comes to writing a book, grammar and punctuation often get pushed aside in favor of focusing on the content of the book. That’s a huge mistake because a person can have great content that no one can understand because the grammar and punctuation is incorrect. How we communicate something is just as important as what we are communicating in the first place. This month, The Decay Within is starting the copy editing process. As I mentioned in part 1 of the production process diary, the manuscript has been stripped…
