Observations from the Doctor, Day 11

The big picture. Read Luke chapter 9.

Reading through Luke chapter 9, we see stories that display both the power and the mercy of God. Jesus feeds the 5,000 and he’s transfigured on the top of the mountain, both demonstrating the power and true awesomeness of God. And then we see Jesus pardoning a city that doesn’t accept him and answering questions of who he is and where he’s from with patience and grace and mercy.

Power and mercy. These two characteristics are so defining of who Jesus is and how he interacts with us. Every day he is full of power and full of authority, and at the same time, he is gracious and merciful to us, even when we don’t deserve it. Because of this, we need to keep the big picture in mind. How important is it if we gain the whole world and yet lose out on our soul or that witch is most important?

It’s hard because we get so distracted in this world with all the things that seem to be the definition of success. And yet, ultimate success is only found in eternity. What is our goal for today? Are we working to enhance the big picture of God’s plan for our life? Are we focused solely on the individual little things that seem to define success in this world? God was able to display such incredible power, while simultaneously having such incredible mercy. Do we allow him to live both of these traits through us every day?
