Observations from the Doctor, Day 1

To observe and to know. Read Luke 1:1-4.
We’re going to begin a study through the book of Luke. This book chronicles the life of Jesus, as recorded by Luke. Luke was a physician and was not one of the original 12 disciples, but he joined the church early on and ultimately ended up writing the books of Luke and Acts.
As we read through the book of Luke, we see very clearly Luke’s attention to detail and the way his medical mind categorizes the evidence to present a case as to why Jesus is the Christ. Luke is writing to someone named Theophilis, which history tells us is probably a Roman official of some kind. Because he was writing to a Gentile, Luke does not bother with a lot of the traditions that the Jewish people would have been focused on. Instead, Luke focuses on how someone without a “religious” background would come to understand that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Luke’s scientific background and study means that he would have spent years pouring over all the factual evidence of Jesus Christ, including court reports and other documents, along with eyewitness accounts. These all become part of what Luke shares in his writings. Luke is also very taken with the miracles of Jesus and recounts more of those than any of the other Gospels.
As we read through Luke, we can realize that his goal for us is so that we can know with certainty that everything we’ve been taught about Jesus is true. Luke is providing the facts and the details so that we can trust that the Jesus we have learned about and heard about is true. As we go through these next several days, the goal is to focus on how understanding the truth of who Jesus is impacts our daily life, and how we are to act and respond differently because we know and understand that truth.
Jesus Christ is real, he’s God, and he truly did everything that people said he did. Luke is going to take us on that journey.
