Double Portion – #11

How much do you expect from God? As we look at the next step in Elisha’s journey, we see him addressing a widow with a credit problem. Read 2 Kings 4:1-7.

Now a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord ; and the creditor has come to take my two children to be his slaves.” Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil.” Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels at large for yourself from all your neighbors, even empty vessels; do not get a few. And you shall go in and shut the door behind you and your sons, and pour out into all these vessels, and you shall set aside what is full.” So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons; they were bringing the vessels to her and she poured. When the vessels were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not one vessel more.” And the oil stopped. Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and your sons can live on the rest.”

Elisha tells her right upfront, don’t get just a few jars. She needed to get a lot of jars. The more the better! How much do we expect from God? The woman came to Elisha expecting him to do something for her. She probably even expected a miracle of some kind. Yet, why didn’t she grab more jars? I’m sure she asked herself that several times after this event wondering why she couldn’t have gotten a few more jars to put a little bit more of God’s amazing blessing in.

For us, when we are coming to God with our questions and our petitions and asking for him to move and work in our life, how much do we really expect from him? Do we expect God to move and work in big ways in our life or are we content with just the little things and only small blessings? Don’t get a few!

Make sure that as you are praying for God to work and move in your life that you don’t miss out on all that he has to do because your expectations are too small. God can do amazing things. Don’t get just a few of the blessings that God intends for you.
