Principles of Leadership, Day 8
Criteria and qualifications. Read 1 Timothy 3:2-4
As we read through these verses of all the things we see Paul sharing with Timothy that make a Godly leader, it can be a bit overwhelming. There are a lot of high standards that leaders are expected to maintain. Why? Why should we have such high standards for those that we place in positions of leadership?
The answer comes from the impact when we have individuals who do not live up to those standards. We have all heard stories of people who had been in roles of leadership in the church or even in businesses, who later fell from a moral or ethical standpoint. The results of the ripple effect of their lack of leadership can be felt throughout an entire organization and often even beyond.
When we think about the criteria or principles that make up a great leader, we have to think about the importance of moral and ethical integrity. A leader’s life is subject to review by anyone and everyone. Yes, leaders are going to make mistakes and their lives are not going to be perfect, however the guiding principles that drive their life are going to be the same principles that drive their leadership. The integrity needed to maintain leadership is absolutely paramount.
As we look at our lives and evaluate our leadership, we cannot simply evaluate our professional or business leadership. That is only a reflection of our personal leadership. Are we the same person in every circumstance? Are we people of integrity that lean on Christ and His mercy and grace every day?
