The Reluctant Follower, Day 10

The do-over. Read Jonah 3:1-3.

It’s always interesting to me that every time we sin and then come back and repent to God, God gives us an opportunity to try again. We almost always get presented with the same temptation to sin in exactly the same way as before we repented. God gives us an opportunity to prove our commitment. Are we truly going to do differently this next time?

Jonah has just been in the belly of a fish. He made a commitment to the Lord while in that situation, and the very first thing that God does when Jonah is back out on the land is give him the same command that he disobeyed originally. Now Jonah has an opportunity to take action based on what he had committed to in the belly of the fish. Is Jonah truly going to obey the Lord, or is he going to run again?

When we come to the Lord and repent, we need to realize that we are going to be faced with exactly the same temptation again. We are going to have to make a decision to stand firm on something that we fell on before. Will we? Are we taking advantage of the do-overs that God provides through confession and repentance.
