The Reluctant Follower, Day 6 I feel so overwhelmed!! Read Jonah 2:1-4. I think we’ve all had moments where we are just exhausted. Life keeps going on and we find ourselves busier and busier, and more and more overwhelmed. I’m sure Jonah was overwhelmed at this point. In chapter 2, he records his prayer to God, we see that he is truly overwhelmed with everything going on. He has a reason to be. He is in the stomach of a fish swimming through the ocean. That’s probably as close to actually being dead, without being dead, that a person can be. Here is where Jonah finds himself when he calls…

The Reluctant Follower, Day 5 God’s provision. Read Jonah 1:17. How often do we pray for God to provide for us? In Matthew chapter 6 Jesus tells the people that they shouldn’t worry about anything because God provides for his children. We typically have an assumption of what that looks like and what we expect God’s provision to be. However, here, God provided for Jonah. He provided a great fish to swallow him. We need to take a minute and revise what our assumptions are of God’s provision. I’m sure Jonah would have never envisioned a large fish swallowing him so that he wouldn’t drown in the sea. Still, the…

The Reluctant Follower, Day 4 They called him innocent. Read Jonah 1:13-16. I remember being younger and getting into arguments with my brother. We would be fussing and arguing about something and then mom would get upset at us. What do each of us claim? “She/He started it!” Basically, we are yelling that we are innocent and we shouldn’t be punished! Yesterday, we see that Jonah is telling the fishermen that he’s completely guilty and that they should just kill him by tossing him into the sea. Instead, these ungodly men are doing everything to save Jonah’s life. They don’t want to throw him into the sea. Jonah doesn’t just…

The Reluctant Follower, Day 3 It’s just all too much! Read Jonah 1:7-12. Have you met that person who seems super dramatic about everything? The smallest detail can be completely blown out of proportion. Everything in their life is a HUGE deal. If you’ve ever tried to give advice to people like that, it usually doesn’t work. You see, they are often not really trying to improve their situation. They actually like the drama and chaos that it creates. These people will often not be interested in your advice, or in trying to make the situation better. They just want to create a lot of drama instead. Here we have…

The Reluctant Follower, Day 2 Do you want God to notice you? Read Jonah 1:4-6. I’ve read through Jonah numerous times but this is honestly the first time that I caught this statement. Jonah is running from God. He does not want to follow God and does not want to do what God has told him to do. He’s hiding in a boat on the way to as far away from where God wants him to be as possible. But a storm comes and all the people of the boat are seeking their gods. The captain of the boat tells Jonah that he needs to call on his god to…

The Reluctant Follower, Day 1 Yep, nope. Not going to do that. Read Jonah 1:1-3. After studying Titus and Paul, who were both willing followers for Christ, I wanted to take a few days and walk back through someone who wasn’t so willing. While I absolutely want to follow Christ with all my heart, I’d be lying if I said there weren’t days when I’m more reluctant about it. Maybe I’m just not feeling it that day. Maybe, I’ve been tossed around a little more that day. Maybe the road has seemed particularly hard. Whatever the reason, there are days when I’m not “feeling” my commitment to Christ. Those are…

Evangelism 101, Day 18 God’s concern. Read Jonah 4:10-11. When it comes down to it, the actual definition of evangelism is about sharing God’s concern for others. You see, God has a concern for others and that is why he came. Our responsibility now that we know God and have a relationship with him is to share that message with others. However, the only way we will do that is if we also share the same concern for others that God has. God asked Jonah why He shouldn’t be concerned for all of these people and animals in this city. Jonah wasn’t concerned about them. God was. When we take…

Evangelism 101, Day 17 Death because of a plant. Read Jonah 4:9. As this story continues, we see God ask Jonah again if he has a right to be angry. This time, instead of being about the people of Nineveh, Jonah is angry about a plant. In fact, he’s so angry that he says he wishes he was dead. When God is moving, are we still so focused on ourselves that we get mad at any little thing that inconveniences us? Why do we get mad about the things that we can’t control? Jonah had no control over the plant, the worm, or the wind. Yet he was so very…

Evangelism 101, Day 16 God provided. Read Jonah 4:7-8. When we read these verses, and even looking back at verse 6 from yesterday. The phrase “God provided” is used 3 times. God provides the plant. God provides the worm. God provides the east wind. Who is to say one of God’s provisions is better or worse than another. Jonah certainly liked the plant more than he like the worm or the wind, but the same God provided them all. When I look at my life, I see the things that God provides. Some of them I instantly like. Other things are profoundly difficult. Still the same God provided them. If…

Evangelism 101, Day 15 God continues to provide. Read Jonah 4:5-6. Jonah was mad and God knew it. Still, God continued to provide for Jonah. This wasn’t even a “need” but was certainly more of a “want” for Jonah. God provided shade to comfort him. Now, remember, this was happening while Jonah was waiting on God to destroy the city. The irony of the situation is striking. Jonah was happy with the comfort that God provided him while he waited for God’s judgment on others. Do we want to enjoy God’s comfort while we are waiting and watching for God’s judgment to fall on others? God’s mercy and grace is…
