Go and Do, Day 18

Is money really bad? Read James 5:1-6.

As James has come to the last chapter of his letter, we see that he is addressing an issue that has been a problem for the early church. What does it mean to have money, and how should people use that money? There were a lot of people in that day and time who had very little money. However, for those who had money, the common practice was to hoard that money and lord it over the people who didn’t have money.

James wants everyone to understand that it is not Christ-like to misuse money. Whenever you see discussions about money and James, it’s always about the way in which someone is dealing with their money, or the attitude they have about their money. In this case, the idea of hoarding money is where the problem is. That’s what causes the corrosion and the corruption. Reading in acts, we see that people had money and they willingly sold things and gave it up in order to be able to help those who didn’t.

Money is simply a tool to be used the way in which God intends it to be used. If we don’t use our money the way God wants us to, he has every right to take it away from us. Are we glorifying God in our money?
