Hope, Day 5

Freedom. Read 1 Peter 2:11-17.

What does it truly mean to be free? Often we think of freedom as a reference to political ideals and policies. We talk about our rights and how we are able to exercise those rights. We get offended if we feel that someone is standing in the way of our rights. But, what does it actually mean to live the Christian life as a free person?

Here, Peter is bringing up the question because the early believers were having a lot of arguments about what they were able and not able to do with their “freedom” in Christ. Some people were using this freedom as a license to do anything and everything they wanted. However, Peter wants people to understand that is not how freedom in Christ works. If we have truly repented and recognized all that God is in our lives, we will understand that yes, we are free from any bounds or ties to this world. But, that is only because we have bound ourselves completely to God and all that he is. We are slaves to Him. So, while we are completely free to the rest of the world, we wouldn’t even think about doing anything that would be contrary to Him and all that He has called us to. That is true freedom. We have the ability to live without any concern what the world thinks of us, because we are so focused only of God and how we can please Him more every day.

Freedom is only found in Jesus, but it doesn’t look the way most people envision freedom to look. Freedom in Christ means we aren’t bound to the world, but freedom in Christ does mean that we are bound to Christ. Our freedom should never be used as an excuse to do evil things. We are to find our freedom in Christ and in living for Him and Him only.
