ADHD Gospel, Day 52

Surprise. Read Mark 13:32-37.

Some people really like surprises and others don’t. It’s interesting to talk to people about their surprise preferences. With those that don’t like surprises, they generally just don’t like to not be part of the planning. They like to know what to expect and when to expect it.

For the disciples, Jesus here is talking about the time of his returning and the end of the world. Jesus knows that they want to know the answer to the timeline questions (as do many of us!!), but he is telling them that these times will happen as a surprise. We won’t know when they are coming. Jesus tells this story that we are to be on our guard and ready because these things will happen as a surprise.

Whether we like surprises or not, whether we like planning or not, we still need to anticipate what this time will be like and work to make sure that we are ready. We must be seeking God in what we are doing. We won’t understand all the timing and the plan. We need to be able to accept that and be OK with that. There are some things that we can’t know. We will ultimately be surprised at the timing, but we don’t have to be surprised about our own readiness. Are we ready for the Lord’s return today?
