    Devotional – July 27, 2011

VERSE: 1 Corinthians 16:9–for a wide door for effective service has opened to me, and there are many adversaries. TRUTH: These two generally go together. If we have a wide door open to us, we should expect many adversaries. Do not be discouraged, but know that God has opened a wide door and we are to follow Him in obedience, regardless of the number of adversaries. RESPONSE: Lord, help me to walk through the wide doors with confidence, knowing that even though there are many adversaries, You have overcome them all.

VERSE: 1 Corinthians 15:17–and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. TRUTH: The resurrection of Christ is a demonstration of the transforming power of God. God can change us and transform us and He showed it when He raised Christ from the dead. This is what our faith is in. Are we living today as one who is being transformed by the power of God? RESPONSE: Lord, You have all power and You are able to transform anything into what You desire. I have faith that in Your timing You will transform me into exactly what You want me to be.

VERSE: 1 Corinthians 14:40–But all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner. TRUTH: Paul has just given a lot of instruction on specific uses of gifts in the church. He ends with this general statement that is an excellent guide for how to conduct ourselves in all things and at all times. RESPONSE: Lord, as I go through my day today, help me to be orderly and proper so that You may be glorified.

TRUTH: The tongue can be powerful in sharing God’s truths and words, but it must also be used to convey God’s love along with those truths. If we do not share God’s love along with God’s truth, we are only sharing a part of who God is.…

VERSE: 1 Corinthians 12:21–And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you “; or again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” TRUTH: We are the body of Christ and we need each other. We cannot successfully carry out all that God has for us to do alone. Are we seeking to work together with other believers or do we try to work alone? RESPONSE: Lord, help me to be willing to seek out help so that together we can do all that You have planned for us.

VERSE: 1 Corinthians 11:1–Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ. TRUTH: What a bold statement! When we look at our life, do we feel confident enough in our walk with Christ to say to others, “If you want to see what Christ looks like, just look at me.”? This is to be our goal in allowing Christ to live through us every day. RESPONSE: Lord, I pray You will live through me and that I will submit to You so that when others look at me and my life, all they see is You.

VERSE: 1 Corinthians 10:13–No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also so that you will be able to endure it. TRUTH: God is faithful. Of all the promises in this verse, this one stands out. No matter what we are going through, God is faithful. He is there. He has been through it before and He is able to lead us through if we are willing to trust Him and place our faith in Him moment by moment.…

VERSE: 1 Corinthians 9:20–For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I may win more. TRUTH: Even though we have freedom in Christ, Paul recognized that God’s heart is to see others come to Him. Paul sacrificed everything to accomplish this goal. What are we willing to sacrifice so that others will come to know Christ?RESPONSE: Lord, because You live in me, Your goals are my goals. I pray that I will be willing to sacrifice everything to see others come to know You.

VERSE: 1 Corinthians 8:9–But take care that this liberty of Yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. TRUTH: Through Christ we have liberty and freedom. However, we must be careful how we use this freedom. We must remember that we are also responsible for the others who watch us and just see our actions, but not our motives, and may misunderstand why we do certain actions. How are we using our freedom in Christ? RESPONSE: Lord, I pray I will be obedient to You in all things so that any who may be watching would see my love for You and would not be misled by…

VERSE: 1 Corinthians 7:35–This I say for your own benefit; not to put a restraint upon you, but to promote what is appropriate and to secure undistracted devotion to the Lord. TRUTH: Paul uses this chapter to give instruction and advice about sexual purity. This can be a difficult area for people to remain pure and obedient to the Lord. We are to show obedience and purity to the Lord in all areas of our life, including our sex life. RESPONSE: Lord, help me to show my devotion to You in all areas of my life, including sex. Help me to correctly use this blessing You’ve given in a way…
