Go and Do, Day 5

Treat everyone like Christ would treat them. Read James 2:1-4.
James gives this mandate in the first verse and then spends the next 3 verses giving an example of what he means. It’s such a relevant example, because I’ve seen this happen even in my own day and time. People treat some people better than others based solely on their appearance. Knowing that James was experiencing this during his day just reminds me that people really don’t change that much from time period to time period.
The core elements of sin and our sinful nature are just the same for us today as they were for the people in the church during Bible times. We are so quick to make decisions about people based upon our initial reaction of their appearance. A lot of this tendency comes from an element of self-preservation, because we need to be able to to assess quickly whether someone is a friend or an enemy. We need to determine whether or not there is a threat.
However, Satan often uses this tendency in us to tempt us to sin and to align ourselves only with those we feel like will give us an advantage. We are naturally programmed to show favoritism. To be like Christ, we must defy what is natural and seek to allow him to love everyone through us. We cannot show the love of Christ to people if we are treating some people differently than others.
Are we treating everyone the way Christ would treat them? If we’re doing that, then we will not be showing favoritism. Christ loves everyone.
