Praising the Word, Day 14

The lamp. Read Psalm 119:105-112.

I love the idea of God’s word being a lamp. Obviously, the initial reference makes me think of the light that helps us to see where we’re going and gives us direction and focus. While all of that is true, one thing that made me stop, and think about a lamp is the fact that in those days, a lamp didn’t really light very far down a path. If I was holding a lantern at the beginning of a path, I would probably only be able to see 2 or 3 steps down the path. I would not be able to see the entire path, and I certainly wouldn’t be able to see my destination.

God’s path for us is extremely similar. God’s word is a lamp to our path, and he lights the path. But generally, he only lights 1 to 2 steps at a time. If we want to see and understand more of God’s path for us, we must take a step. That’s the only way for the path to be illuminated. Once we take a step, the next step is lit, and then the next, and then the next.

God gives us exactly what we need to take the next step on the path that he has for us. We can trust him that he knows the entire path and is leading us exactly where he needs us to be. But, we have to get comfortable with the idea that we will not be able to see the entire path. Do we trust God? Are we willing to take the step that he has lit for us on the path today, knowing that tomorrow, he will light the next step?
