Wisdom Squandered, Day 9

What do you call someone who promises God something and then doesn’t do it? A fool. Read Ecclesiastes, 5:1-7.
I always wondered what prompted this chapter in Ecclesiastics. The scripture doesn’t really share at a time when Solomon promised God something and didn’t do it. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a time in his life when he did exactly that. Or maybe he simply saw the results of that in the lives of others around him. Either way, Solomon fully and completely understands that there is a level of respect and reverence that we are to have when we are talking with God.
While I fully and completely believe that God knows us intimately and wants to be on a close personal relationship with us, it’s also true that we must understand and respect the position that God has. He is the creator of the universe and Lord of everything. He knows everything and he is over everything. We are tremendously insignificant in his sight.
It’s important to keep that perspective when we are speaking to God and promising God something. Don’t promise something that you aren’t going to do. Don’t say you’re going to commit to something you have no intention a following through on. To Solomon, there could be no greater level of stupidity than that. Why would you promise something to the God and creator of the universe that you had no intention of doing.
If you are going to promise something to God, fulfill it quickly. What have we promised God? What have we said that we would do and what are we not fulfilling? We may need to evaluate our lives and go back to determine whether there is something that we need to get right in our relationship with Christ. Don’t be guilty of offering a sacrifice of fools to God today.
