Hope, Day 7

Submission. Read 1 Peter 3:1-7.
I know a lot of people who would really like to pretend that these 7 versions aren’t in the Bible, both men and women. The idea of submission in our day and age and in our culture often has negative connotations. It implies a lesser-than status, or at least that’s what we think. We see submission as somehow weak and unimportant, and so as women, a lot of us push against this idea. I’ve also seen men who have used this idea as a reason to oppress the women in their lives. Yet, the idea of loving them and treating them with respect and consideration isn’t part of their understanding.
Husbands and wives are different and God created them differently with different roles and different purposes, but both are absolutely necessary. People don’t have to ultimately like what scripture says, about the role of a man and a woman in a marriage. There are a lot of things in the Bible that people don’t like, but that doesn’t change the truth of the relationship that God has established between a man and a woman. The woman needs to build up her husband and allow him to lead the way as God intended him to. The man needs to support, encourage, champion, and cheer on his wife the way God designed the marriage relationship to be.
We are to submit ourselves to God, all of us, and that has to happen first and foremost. As we are doing that, we will do, just like scripture says, “in the same way” and treat ourselves and each other the way God would have us. If we’re married, our marriage relationship will be a direct reflection of our relationship with Christ. If we struggle to submit to our husbands or if we struggle to respect our wives, we will struggle to submit to God and we will struggle to respect God’s position of authority. These go hand in hand together. Christ is our example, as we learned yesterday, and marriage is to be a visual representation of our relationship with God. What do we need to address in our relationships today?
