Hope, Day 11

Gifts and service. Read 1 Peter 4:7-11.

Most people like to receive gifts. We like it when someone remembers our birthday or a holiday and we receive a present or a gift from someone else. In the same way, we generally prefer to be served. We feel appreciated by others when they provide for us, or do things for us. In some cases, we enjoy going out to eat, so we are served by someone else. We don’t have to cook the food ourselves or cleanup the food. We like being served.

However, Peter talks here about the importance of serving others and using our gifts and abilities to enrich the lives of others. God has provided each one of us with talents and abilities. We are to utilize those by serving and glorifying God. Our gifts and talents were not given to us just to make our own lives better, but so we can enrich and enhance the lives of other people. We are to be showing Christ and his love to others.

Are we using the gifts that have given us as a way to serve other people, or are we focused solely and primarily on how we can be served by others. God came as a servant. Peter witnessed how Jesus served others. We are to serve others as a well.
