The Messenger, Day 1

Respect. Read Malachi 1:1-7

Why do we respect someone or something? When we take a look at people or positions or titles, often we ascribe respect to them based on what we have learned about the person or the position. This comes up often in the political world. I may or may not agree with the individual in a certain political office, but I respect the office that they hold and the position they have. My words and actions should reflect that respect.

God is telling the people that he is frustrated by their lack of respect. He is their God and while they don’t love him, they aren’t even showing him respect. God indicates that He knows that the people are capable of honor and respect because they are showing that in other situations. But, they aren’t showing God respect, so he sends his messenger in order to address this situation.

Do we respect God? Do we show him the respect that the holiness demands? He is the Lord of the universe and he is able to do anything. He created everything that we know and he is worthy of that respect. Are we mindful of the holiness of God? God loves us and wants a relationship with us, but we need to recognize that he is still the all-powerful creator of the universe. What does our respect to God look like today?
