No Distractions, Day 7

Not earned. Read Galatians 3:1-9.

Paul continues to share with the Galatians the importance of understanding their faith. He wants to make sure they recognize that there was nothing they did that earned them salvation. They made a decision to believe in Christ. And because of that decision, that was credited to them as righteousness. Paul even goes so far as to bring up Abraham and remind the people that God made Abraham to be the father of many nations, not just the one nation of Israel. Anyone who believes on Christ by faith is a child of Abraham, not just the people of Israel.

The Galatians were getting distracted, thinking that they had to do more in order to maintain their salvation. Paul wanted to remind them that receiving Christ as Savior in their hearts, is enough. Once they make Christ the Lord of their life, there’s nothing else that they can do that will make them more right with God. They cannot earn God’s love and favor. None of us can be good enough to be able to be right with God.

It’s hard for us to understand this because we live in a society where we believe very strongly that we should get what we deserve, or what we have earned. God wants us to know that we don’t deserve and didn’t earn anything. The reason we have the relationship with God that we have is because God chose to allow a way for our sinfulness to be covered by Christ. That is the only way we could be made right with God.

We can’t get distracted by what we are doing. We follow Christ because we love him, but being obedient to Christ does not make us more right with Christ. Just like for the Galatians, following the Jewish laws did not make people more right with God. Salvation through Christ alone is the only way to be made right with God. Do we recognize the gift of God that he is provided through his son, Jesus Christ, and are we resting in that gift today.
