ADHD Gospel, Day 23

Guilt. Read Mark 6:7-16.
Today’s verses are two stories that often are read separately, yet when I saw them today and read them together, they make so much sense together. Jesus sends out a group of people, his disciples, into the cities to preach and to teach and to share the message that people are to repent and turn to him. His disciples go and do exactly what he has told them to do.
Because they do that, the king Herod hears about it. When Herod hears about it, he is immediately reminded of the message of John the Baptist, and he has tremendous guilt over the way he treated John. Mark then recounts in his gospel the story, almost like a flashback of what had happened to John the Baptist.
Guilt can have very interesting affects and impacts on people. For Herod, it reminded him of what he did and how badly he felt about what he did. But it did not push him to repent. Does our guilt and hurt over the things that we have done wrong make us sit and wallow in our sorrow and our regrets, or does it push us to action? Jesus’s disciples were preaching a message of repentance. They were urging people to come to Christ and to repent. Herod heard that message, and while that message made him realize his sin, he never took the next step to repent for what he had done.
How are we impacted by God’s message to us today? Do we simply feel guilty for the sin in our life and the negative things that we have done, or does that push us to repentance, and to seeking Christ in our lives daily?
