Hope, Day 8

Give an answer. Read 1 Peter 3:8-16.

We like to be people with answers. If someone has a problem, we want to have the answer. If we are asked a question, we feel obligated to know the answer. Sometimes people will even make up an answer, just to have an answer to share. We can be so quick to give an answer. Yet, when it comes to the reasons we follow Christ, often we gloss over those answers, or hide those answers, or don’t really understand our answers.

Peter has been talking about the hope that we have in Christ, and his challenge today is to understand the answer for why we have that hope in the first place. We should be able to understand and articulate what those answers are. We say we believe in Christ, we try and live like we believe in Christ. Why? What is the reason behind the actions that we take and the focus of our lives?

More than just giving an answer, we see that answer must be given with gentleness and respect. We’re not to lash out at people, or to accuse them, or to judge them. We can have an answer for the reason that we have the hope that we do. And we can share that answer with love and respect, even with somebody who does not agree with us. Do we have an answer for the hope that we have? And do we seek to share that answer with gentleness and respect to all?
