Book Review – Killing Lincoln by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard
Abraham Lincoln was one of the most fascinating figures in history, living during one of the most tumultuous times in United States history, and dying in a shocking assassination plot. This is a fascinating book that reads like a story. I wish my history books in school would have been this interesting and informative about the entire circumstance surrounding the death of one of the greatest Presidents of the United States. I was enthralled with the style of writing as the book reads much more like a novel than a history book. O’Reilly and Dugard include the entire background story surrounding the events that lead up to the assassination, starting…

VERSE: Job 14:5–Since his days are determined, the number of his months is with You; and his limits You have set so that he cannot pass. TRUTH: Our time on earth is limited and will not last forever. God alone knows the length of our days. He sets the number and there is nothing we can do to add time to it. What are we doing with the time we have? Do we use it to find glory in ourselves or to praise You and set up treasure in heaven? RESPONSE: Lord, I don’t always understand Your allocations of days. Why do some have so many and some get so…

VERSE: Job 13:15–Though He slay me, I will hope in Him. Nevertheless, I will argue my ways before Him. TRUTH: Job will hope in God regardless of what God will do to Him. Even if God takes Job’s life, Job will hope in God. Do we have that level of commitment to what God has for us. It does mention that Job will continue to argue his ways before God. God is big enough to handle our questions. If we come to Him honestly, committed to Him no matter what, yet earnestly seeking Him and His will, God understands that we often have questions. God doesn’t promise to always answer…

VERSE: Job 12:13–“With Him are wisdom and might, to Him belong counsel and understanding.” TRUTH: Job, even after going through all he’s been through, still has this to say about God. God has the wisdom and the might. God owns all the understanding and He is never surprised by event that happen. Plus, He alone full comprehends the significance of those events in the overall plan He has. When we go through difficulties, do we still say that God knows all things and has all wisdom? RESPONSE: Lord, I know that You are over everything and that You alone hold wisdom and might. I praise You for understanding all things…

VERSE: Job 11:11–For He knows false men, and He sees iniquity without investigating. TRUTH: God is overall and knows more about everything, including people, than we ever will. God doesn’t have to wonder why people do the things they do, He knows. He sees every motive, every thought, every action without having to even try. While we may, at times, put our trust and faith in the wrong people, God is never fooled or tricked. We must put our faith and trust firmly in God. RESPONSE: Lord, You are the only person worthy of my trust. You see and know all things I think and do, as well as those…

VERSE:Job 10:2–“I will say to God, ‘Do not condemn me. Let me know why You contend with me.'” TRUTH: When we experience difficulties, the question “why” is one of the most common questions to ask. “Why is this happening to me?” “Why are You allowing this?” We often assume that God has some rational, logical purpose that if we were just aware of would make it easier to endure. However, God often does not reveal the “why” for the situations we go through. There can be several reasons, but one reason is that we are to take comfort, not in knowing the “why,” but in the “Who,” God Himself. RESPONSE:…

VERSE: Job 9:33–“There is no umpire between us, who may lay His hand upon both of us.” TRUTH: Job shares about the perfection of God and the sinfulness of man. He then states that he wishes there was a mediator to go between God and man. Someone who would be able to identify with both sides. What Job wishes for, God provides through the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus was God and also became man so that He could bridge the gap between a perfect God and a sinful man. Through Jesus, we can come directly to God with all our concerns, questions, anything! RESPONSE: God, thank You for providing…

VERSE: Job 8:15–“He trusts in his house, but it does not stand; he holds fast to it, but it does not endure.” TRUTH: Bildad, another of Job’s friends, now speaks and shares how godless people end up placing their hope and trust in their material possessions, which will eventually pass away. While this doesn’t apply to Job in this circumstance, it can apply to many other people. Do we trust in our material things, houses, cars, money, to be able to provide for us, or are we trusting only in God? RESPONSE: Lord, today I want to hold fast to You and You alone, nothing else. You are all I need…

Book Review – Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
Mockingjay, the final book of The Hunger Games Trilogy, was again, one that I read in one setting. I had so thoroughly enjoyed the first two books that I had really high expectations for the finale. Unfortunately, I was not as thrilled with the final book. I liked the plot line for the most part. I felt let down by the main character Katniss. Through the first two books, Katniss had really been angry with her mother for how she got depressed following the death of Katniss’s father. However, in this book, Katniss seems to follow in her mother’s footsteps and just didn’t seem to have the same qualities that…

VERSE: Job 7:17–“What is man that You magnify him, and that You are concerned about him?” TRUTH: Job looks at his life and everything about it seems futile and pointless. He asks God what God is even mindful of man, why man is even noticed by God. The fact remains that we are very important to God. We are His creation and He loves us very much. Even when we don’t feel that we are worthy of God’s notice, He sees us and loves us. RESPONSE: Lord, some days I don’t feel that I matter at all. Yet, You love me, You created me, and You care for me. I…
