Observations from the Doctor, Day 22

Persistent Humility. Read Luke chapter 18.
As I read through Luke, chapter 18, these 2 words stand out. The stories and parables and lessons that Jesus teaches us about and that Luke shares in this chapter, they can be summed up in those two words: persistence and humility. The question becomes, how do those 2 go together?
We can look at the examples of persistence in the chapter and think, “Wow, they were so bold and so arrogant is to think that they would be helped.” They were persistent in calling out to the Lord. Then we see the examples of the importance of humility in recognizing our place compared to the Holy God of the universe.
While it’s a difficult concept to put together, I actually really like the idea of persistent humility. We need to understand who we are compared to the holy and majestic God of the universe. We are a sinner who needs to cry out, “Have mercy on me, Lord!” just like the tax collector and just like the lame man did in this chapter. But we are also a creation of the Lord and one that he values and loves, which should give us the confidence to be persistent in coming to him.
We need him desperately, and our humility makes sure we know that. We need him desperately, and our persistence keeps us focused on securing his help in our time of need. Do we understand who we truly are in God’s eyes? We are desperate and need his profound love. We can be humble and persistent at the same time. Are we coming to God with persistent humility today?
